2. Job Overview:
Q. What exactly will my job entail?
A. Coaches will be contracted to work for 9 weeks from June 12-Aug 15, 2008. C2C works with 16 Cities in Southern California. C2C will run 42 camps for 2008. The coach will work weekly in a specific City. Camps vary in number of participants from 20 to 100, each week. On the Monday of each week, the coach will be assigned a group who he/she will coach for the week. For a detailed view of the structure of the camps, please click the link "summer camps".
Q. What ages are the players that we coach?
A. Coaching instruction is delivered on camp to male and female campers aged between 4 - 14 years of age.
Q. How are coaching groups split up?
A. All coaches are required to spend time working with different age groups. Sometimes you may coach 4-5 year olds and some weeks you may coach 12-13 year olds. Groups are mixed with girls and boys.
Q. What is the soccer ability of the campers?
A. Ability is usually beginner to intermediate with a few ‘club’ playing players.
Q. What are the hours of camp?
A. Normal camp hours are 5 hours per day 9am-2pm. This means you are required to be at the camp from 8:00am - 2:30pm each day for set up and sign out.
Q. Can I choose where I want to work?
A. No. C2C makes a schedule of where each coach will be placed weekly. Coaches will only receive this information on the Sunday before each week.
Q. What happens each Sunday?
A. The coach/group of coaches will travel to Carlsbad, which is the office of C2C for a Sunday meeting before departing to their next location. The next location could be as close as 30 mins away or as far as 3 hours away. There can be a lot of traveling on Sundays, but if you want to see and experience as much of the country as possible, there is no better way to do it.
3. Arrival and Departure:
Q. Who should I fly with?
A. We recommend the on line travel agent Orbitz.com or AerLingus
Q. Where do I fly to?
A. San Diego
Q. When do I fly in?
A. Arrival date is June 12 and time of arrival should be between 6am – 2pm. Do not fly into LA. From experience with many coaches, flying into San Diego is the cheapest in the long run.
Q. Will I be collected from the airport?
A. C2C will collect you. The collection time will be e-mailed to you. C2C asks coaches to send their flight details immediately after booking flight. If a coach is delayed at a connecting airport, C2C requires the coach to phone immediately from that connecting airport.
Q. Can I fly in earlier than this date?
A. You can. C2C requires you to be at San Diego Airport June 12 between 6am – 2pm. If arrive earlier, C2C will not be able to collect you from the airport. If coming over prior to this date, we advise you to book accommodation in advance
Q. Can I fly in later than this date?
A. No.
Q. Will C2C drop off coaches to airport once they have finished working with C2C?
A. Due to irregularity of flight dates on departure, it will be up to the coach to make his/her own way to San Diego airport for departure.
4. Location of Work:
Q. Where in Southern California will I be located?
A. Currently the majority of our camps are along the coast of Southern California between San Diego and LA. There are also camps inland. Please visit our Camp page and go to Summer Camp Listings for a list of locations. The Sunday Meetings will take place in Carlsbad, which is 45 mins North of San Diego down town. No camps will be further than 3 hours away from Carlsbad.
5. Accommodation:
Q. Where do I stay Mon-Sunday?
A. You will stay with a ‘host family’ who will usually have at least one child attending the camp. The host family will provide you with meals throughout the week, look after washing your clothes and provide hospitality second to none.
6. Transport:
Q. How will I travel from camp to camp?
A. C2C will provide a company issued vehicle for camps each week. There will be an elected driver who drives staff to and from camp each day. Having a valid driving license will enhance your opportunity to work with C2C.
This car is available on weekends. Throughout the summer drivers will be responsible for the cars and will hire them under their own name. Gas will be paid for by C2C when working camps for C2C. Any vehicle costs that are incurred outside of camp hours and on weekends will be the responsibility of the C2C driver and passengers of that car (this includes traffic fines)
Q. Do I need a driving license to work for C2C?
A. No. Applicants with a current, clean full Irish driving license who are over the age of 21 possess an advantage over other candidates. Applicants that are under 21 and posses a driving license are considered non drivers by C2C as our insurance policy does not cover drivers under 21.Obviously to fulfill our coaching commitments we need coaches who are able to drive to our sites. However, we are able to accommodate a limited number of non-drivers each year so this should not discourage you from applying.
Q. What is public transport like in Southern California?
A. Public transport is not good. Whether you are in a city or wish to travel from one city to another, you will find it difficult. If you Google earth the geography of San Diego, you will find that it is a wide spread area with many Cities spread out by 7 miles or so along the coast of Southern California. The best method of transport is via Buses and the Coaster. The Coaster is the main train that runs up and down the Coast.
7. Payment:
Q. How and when do I get paid?
A. Wages are paid weekly. C2C will pay each coach into a personal bank account that will be set up during your orientation week. Wages are $225 per coach. Drivers receive $250. Camp Directors are paid $275 per camp. Inclement weather does not affect your salary. However, if you cannot work due to sickness or injury, you will not get paid for those hours. This will be detailed in your contract.
8. Coaching Orientation:
Q. What does the orientation in the USA entail?
A. If you are chosen to coach with C2C, we will forward you exact details on the orientation and a link to our coaching manual so that you can arrive prepared. The orientation will run from Fri June 13 to Fri June 20 in Big Bear. Big Bear is a beautiful town set in the mountains East of San Diego.
Robert Mulligan, C2C’s Director of Coaching, will run this week. He will provide detail fo the Orientation to those selected. The orientation is unpaid. Food and accommodation are provided.
Mountain biking and wake boarding on the Big Bear Lake are worth taking advantage when coaches have time off. It is a great experience. This is a great set up for the summer. Coaches will leave this week being able to coach at camps at the high level that C2C requires its coaches to be at.
9. Who can come with me:
Q. Can I visit friends in San Diego while working for C2C?
A. It will be very unlikely that you will see friends while working with C2C. C2C does not hire staff that intends to come to South California to party for the summer. C2C hires coaches who want to coach and progress their coaching career, while having a great time living in a different culture and visiting different parts of South California.
Q. Can I come with a friend?
A. You may apply with a friend. However, we cannot guarantee you will be on the same camps together.
10. Travel:
Q. Do I get any vacation time?
A. The week of June 30-July 4 is off due to the 4th of July celebrations. During this week, we recommend that all coaches stay together in groups and plan where they want to stay. We will go through this during the orientation in Big Bear. Please note that you will need some money to keep you going for this week, so plan in advance for this. Due to the short nature of this type of contract there is no vacation period built in. Many coaches take time at the end of their contract to travel. C2C highly recommends that you do this in order to make your trip a great one.
Q. Can I travel the USA after my contract with C2C has finished?
A. Yes. You are permitted to travel in the US for as long as the duration of your Visa
.
11. What to bring:
C2C recommends that you bring as little as possible. You will be required to share a car with other coaches so the smaller your suitcase/back pack, the more room for all coaches. You will be able to wash and dry your clothes using the host families’ washing facilities.
We recommend that you bring a folder for your visa, passport and flight details. You are required to wear your own socks and cleats (boots) at every camp. Please bring either soccer or ankle socks.
Coaches should have sufficient money to keep them going for the first few weeks while in the US. Note you have the July 4 week off and your first week is unpaid. This means you will only be receiving payment for one of your first three weeks. Please budget ahead.
Please prepare to have sufficient cash reserves so that you can enjoy yourself out here. C2C wages are intended more as ‘pocket-money’ rather than a salary that you can save up and bring home. You will probably not spend much during the week, but on weekends and weeks off, you will want to have enough to enjoy what California has to offer.
You should also have a source of money for emergencies (injuries, loss of personal belongings etc).
12. Contact:
Q. How can my family contact me while in the US?
A. Coaches can use the C2C US office address and our administrative staff will make every effort to forward communications to you at your location. When you are over here, C2C will ask coaches to let them know if this is required. The best form of communication with your family and with C2C is via email so you need to be sure you have a current email address, which you check frequently.
