Coast 2 Coast wants students to become more interested in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) through soccer. Our curriculum adopts three methods of introducing students to STEM topics and terms. These three methods are storyline, curiosity and trigger words. Each day, coaches spark student interests through a story that focuses on a grade-specific topic from the Next Generation Science Standards. Coaches will then ask students one curiosity question before the soccer game. During the soccer game, students can only earn points e.g. for scoring a goal, if they call out the STEM vocabulary trigger word they just learned.
As a leader in STEM and sports innovation, Harvard graduate and engineering professor from MIT, Ricardo Valerdi has been partnering with Coast 2 Coast in creating curriculum that will excite children in STEM through playing soccer. Since 2015, Professor Valerdi has been advising Coast 2 Coast, on a monthly basis, the ways to update curriculum to match students’ needs.
